Mary Stephens has been competing in cosplay for 5 years and has won numerous awards including best needlework, category firsts, best in shows, and multiple placements in the prestigious Crown Championship of Cosplay. She enjoys creating costumes from scratch—she makes almost every part of her cosplays herself, from many fandoms including Star Wars, movies, comics, Disney, video games, anime, and TV shows.
Mary is best known for her needlework designs of Duchess Satine , Maleficent, and Mary Poppins, of course. Needlework isn’t her only medium– also works with many others including leather, foam, thermoplastics, resin, clay, jewelry making, and wood. She appears as a cosplay guest and helps coordinate and judge cosplay costume competitions, working alongside convention owners and some of the best cosplayers in the world in the process, among them including Yaya Han, Ivy Doomkitty, Riddle, Monica Lee, Animia, and industry specialists including Chris and Miracole Burns.
Mary’s work has been shown multiple times in print in the Cosplay Culture Magazine. She’s passionate about cosplay being open to everyone, and in that respect has helped start up cosplay clubs in the Cincinnati and Dayton areas that organizes cosplayers to meet up, network, and learn new skills together.
She’s also part of Cos-Ohana, a “family” group of cosplayers that not only enjoys the art of making the costumes, but bringing entertainment to the kids and fans that attend the events. She looks forward to the next cosplay challenge!
